Since the OWC is an nvme drive, are you sure they support hibernation?

As of the this summer, they did not.

I run a 1TB SX8200 in a 13" MacBook Pro Late 2013 without hibernation. It's really no big deal, just means it lives attached more to a power cord.
if OWC drive is NVMe then it will likely have the same issues on 2013-2014 machines. Best solution would be a third-party AHCI-based drive that runs via PCIe bus, but these a extremely rare and are not cheap. If I remember correctly certain old-old Samsung SSDs are AHCI based, and also transcend has jetdrive lineup of ssd (no clue if they are still selling these).

Newer 2018+ Macbooks have storage soldered onto the board.

You both are right! The OWC is just a custom non-adapter requiring NVMe... I didn't realize the product had changed (I believe at some point they were selling a PCIe product).

Thanks for linking the thread with the issues listed. Too bad, I was hoping that for the premium I'd be getting a near-stock replacement option.

Maybe a bit of a noob-question: If I get the hardware and follow Cmd+Q's guide, what happens when there is a new firmware update because of a macOS update? Will I have to mess with it again?

I am trying to piece together what I would need to upgrade my Macbook Air 6,2 (mid-2013).
So, basically:
~$130 for 1TB NVMe SSD
~$15 for adapter
~$65 dollars for additional hardware
+Time to hack it all together:
$210+ (not including my time)

All you need to upgrade is
  • m2 PCIe adapter from aliexpress ~$3, no need to overpay for other adapters, I'm using this - http://ali.pub/43u6wv for several weeks and had no issues whatsoever
  • pentalobe + torx screwdriver to open the case (http://ali.pub/43uan1) ~$4
  • any external hard drive/USB flash to install macOS and transfer data from old SSD
$3 + $4 + $130(SSD) = $137 total vs $230 for OWC

Time required: 10m minutes to replace the drive itself + several hours to transfer data to a new drive

OWC drive is just a regular nvme drive compatible with an Apple proprietary connector. You won't get better battery life compared to another drive since it doesn't use Apple power-saving features.

~$65 dollars for additional hardware
What do you mean by additional hardware ??
Are newer 2018+ Macbooks NVMe-native? (I assume, but haven't researched, since I don't own one that new).
All macbooks from 2016 and later have SSD soldered in, and not replaceable.

According to user reports MacOS installer doesn't update bootrom in 2013-2014 macbooks with 3rd-party SSDs so it should not perform an update only because of that.

However should you decide to pop in the original apple ssd in order to update your macbook then (i'm guessing here) the updater is likely to overwrite contents of efi chip - meaning you'd have to re-do everything from the scratch using newer bootrom damp, edit it and re-flash it.
On PCs bios updates usually come as a whole package meaning everything is replaced apart from serial numbers and user settings.

I was detailing all parts for installing NVMe and enabling all features (hibernate) that the OEM supports. The $65 refers to the middleman device that you need to capture firmware/drivers from a donor 2015+ MB.

I haven’t followed keynotes for the newest Macs. Didn’t realize these are now soldered. I guess the next machine I buy, I will just have to plan for the expense of buying with at least 1TB.

In the meantime, I removed my (rarely used) bootcamp partition to give me a little more breathing room, and plan to move my infrequently used media to an external SSD. I don’t want to lose hibernate functionality, and don’t want to do the steps to enable it on NVMe (don’t have access to a donor 2015+ machine anyhow).

Thanks for the added info!

Have you notices any battery improvement since the update?
i was home all day and finally able to test battery life with Sabrent rocket 1TB MBP early 2015 13" (188.0.0.0) new bootroom, just basically browsing and watch a few youtube videos (50% screen brightness), for 8hrs not bad at all.

I find the Sabrent 1TB extremely variable with battery life. It's like a turbo car to me... if you baby it, then it doesn't suck the juice badly at all, but floor it everywhere and it'll be thirsty af.

If I'm surfing the web or watching netflix the Sabrent is fine. Not _quite_ as good as Apple SSD, but within 10-20%, so like only noticeable if you're thinking about it. However throw on Lightroom doing some heavy processing, Visual Studio in a VM, or both at once, and I've seen the battery go flat within 3 hours.

On MBPr mid-2014 15" without hacked driver.

If I'm not mistaken OWC drives also need to be patched in order to get hibernation working on 2013-2014 models ?

has anyone managed to do the bootrom upgrade CMD+Q wrote up? Just wonder a few things:-

1. can you do the bootrom upgrade on an already built Mojave on new Nvme disk or must it be reformatted ?
2. what happens with future releases? will it work with mojave ++ next OS release?
3. how do we lobby apple to just fix it in a patch so we are all kosha?
4. anyone in NYC area able to do this for me for $5/cup of coffee and chat :)

tnx

Please read the first page wiki its all in there.
I already read it and it doesn't answer all my questions.

So does anyone know if its true that the macbook air 2015 13" gets a bulge on the bottom case (where the ssd is located) after upgrading the factory ssd to a nvme?

And, does updating the macOS to Catalina update the boothrom to the version required for nvme usage?

No, unless you buy a wrong adapter (certain cheap old adapters have a full-size m.2 slot instead of low profile one).

And, does updating the macOS to Catalina update the bootrom to the version required for nvme usage?

Yes, updating the macOS to Catalina should also update the bootrom to the latest version with nvme support.

I actually contacted OWC recently about fitting one of their Aura Pro X2 to an early 2015 MacBook Pro 13" and if I needed to do anything or change anything and was sent the below via email.

I interpret it as OWC basically recommending to disable deep sleep on all Mac's that come stock with an AHCI drive no matter the year. Probably just to play it safe and reduce the amount of potential issues/support tickets, etc.

You need to disable deep sleep only.

Open the Terminal app
Type the following: sudo pmset -a standby 0
Press Return
Quit the Terminal

With this setting the system will sleep/wake normally it just cannot deep sleep which happens typically after 3 hours. But if you are not using the system for 3 or more hours you should really power it off anyways. Sleep is meant to be used for short term purposes and it is always good to completely shut down the computer periodically as a form of reset. So, when you are away from the system long term, shutting down is best practice. In older systems with 5400rpm HDDS full shut down was annoying because it took so long for the system to start up. But with super-fast SSDs in modern systems this is no longer a concern

..............................................................................
Email thread below, read from bottom to top if you want.
..............................................................................
My reply below.

Thank you for the quick reply.

Sorry if I'm annoying or asking stupid questions.

Say I went ahead and purchased an Aura Pro X2

Would I need to disable sleep on my early 2015 MacBook Pro 13" (MacBookPro12,1 A1502) with an OWC Aura Pro X2? If not you can basically ignore the rest of the questions below.

How would I disable sleep? (Only if I need to with the Aura Pro X2)

How does that affect how my MacBook operates? (Only if I need to disable sleep with the Aura Pro X2)

Is there anything else I might need to know beyond the instructional video on your website and the iFixit guides?
I know how to reinstall macOS from scratch with a USB recovery drive.
I know how to open the MacBook and replace a drive.
(I am Cisco certified for general PC repair and upgrade)

I can't seem to see anything on your site mentioning sleep requiring to be disabled or modified.

.Kind Regards,
Me

Subject: Case: Support Question
Dear fiftofar,
Thank you for contacting OWC customer support.

The larger the SSD capacity the more power it uses. So if you increase the capacity to a larger SSD it is going to use more power. It does not matter which brand or type of SSD is used. More capacity means more nand cells means a larger overall power requirement. If you do not want additional battery drain then you cannot upgrade the capacity of your drive.

Your MacbookPro does not use M2 SSDs. No Apple system to date uses M2 SSDs. All Mac systems with blade SSDs have proprietary connectors used only by Apple. Our Aura Pro X2 is designed with the same Apple proprietary connector as the factory SSD found in the late-2013-2015 MacbookPros.

You have to disable deep sleep in order for the Mac to sleep properly when using a 3rd party NVMe SSD. I am sorry but we do not have any hacks or firmware to bypass this. We can only recommend you disable deep sleep. For your reference almost all Apple factory SSDs are AHCI which is why 3rd party NVMe SSDs operate differently than the Apple stock SSDs.

If you have any questions feel free to contact me again. Thank you and have a pleasant day.

Sincerely,
Rebecca R.

Original question.
Hey there,

I have an early 2015 MacBook Pro 13 (macbookpro12,1) 2.7GHz - 128GB, currently running the latest macOS Catalina with boot rom 187.0.0.0

I was interested in upgrading the storage in it.
Reading around people are using an adaptor to fit m.2 SSD's, I have no interest in doing that.

I am more interested in using a genuine apple or an OWC drive which is a proper fit, no adaptors required, designed for use with a Mac or MacBook.

My question is, does using an OWC Aura Pro X2 SSD or OWC Aura N have a negative impact on battery life during use or during sleep?

Being an early 2015, my MacBook Pro should be fully compatible and not require any sleep work arounds, patches or hacks.

It has been reported that the m.2 drives have been having a negative impact on battery life, sometimes an decrease in battery life.

Thanks for your time, I hope you have a great day!

Kind regards,
fiftofar.

Corsair MP510 (512 gigs) on new (taped (neatly, must say)), long Sintech (?) adapter in early 2015 Air - running like a champ, temperatures are fine, battery got a bit of hit though (although did clean Catalina install and not sure if it's just macOS because iStat is showing pretty low energy usage figures for this drive...). Zero sleep or drain issues. I'm VERY happy (for now ;) ).

Hi, how low are those figures? Could you attach some stats screenshots ?

Thanks

Sure! This is what I can put right now (noticed that for example seq write can vary quite a lot from test to test (638 here to e.g. 890 - generally, drive is min. 2 times faster, prolly more). Catalina works very nice, animations are fluid even with 2nd monitor (1080) and lots of apps / windows...I'm pretty amazed that it still is my pretty little machine from 2015 ;)

Please don't confuse link width (number of pci-express lanes) and PCIe generaion (version). Your SSD is using 4 lanes at PCIe 2.0 specs. One PCIe 2.0 lane equals to theoretical 500MBs throughput. PCIe 3.0 is twice as fast. Real throughput is always lower due to error correction and whatnot.

If your drive is formatted into APFS then yes. As far as I know HFS doesn't behave this way. Why? - no clue.

Thank you for your explaination, at least it's a jump from the 300 MB/s I was getting from the standard 129GB original drive.

Is there a way to change from the APFS to HFS without losing data?
I don't recall seeing the option to select APFS when I formatted the drive.

Not completely sure since I haven't had a chance to go though this process personally, but I think the best course of action would be to make a time machine backup, re-partition the drive and then restore the backup.
As for filesystem it can be chosen upon erasing/partitioning the drive under "Format" drop-down menu. Mac OS Extended Journaled - is what you want.

I installed recently a ADATA 8200pro 512gb in my early 2015 macbook pro 13.
This works fine, but the standby mode seems to consume more energy. (15% drain in sleep mode for 10h)
I have the impression that hibernation does not work when it should.
How can I verify that?

Same here, just fitted an ADATA SX8200 Pro 2TB drive to a early 2015 MacBook Pro 13.
Clean install with Catalina 10.15.1 (19B88), Bootrom 188.0.0.0.0, SMC 2.28f7, no modifications to power settings except display sleep timer through energy saver preferences, no terminal commands run or anything like that.
Yesterday morning around 8:00AM (24/11/19) had 100% battery, did a reboot, disabled bluetooth, unplugged charger, closed the lid, opened it up this morning just before 8:00AM (25/11/19) and I was down to 15% battery.
I expected a hit to battery life but once it hits hibernate I thought the system was basically off.

Just got this MacBook, looks like it has a brand new battery/keyboard/top cover, never used it on battery before, also never used/had a Mac before.

I have an early 2015 13" Air and started using a nvme drive with High Sierra. Each time there was a High Sierra bootrom update, my Air would not update the bootrom until I installed the HS update with the original drive. After the update, I put the nvme back in and it continued to function without the need to reinstall anything. Eventually, my air started accepting bootrom updates on a nvme drive with the Mojave beta release.

Idle sleep preventers: IODisplayWrangler

I changed the hibernation mode, I no longer have this important battery loss

sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 25

It's not ideal, it should work with mode 3 on our models.
I don't really understand why other people said that it worked at the time with the same ssd model.
