Day 48
Today we have a big highlight I played all day. A game with quite the interesting history that many thought would never actually happen
Six Days in Fallujah
Six Days in Fallujah is a realistic first-person tactical shooter based on true stories of Marines, Soldiers, and Iraqi civilians during the toughest urban battle since 1968.

Before I talk about the game, a quick history lesson is in order
In 2003 the US led coalition forces began Operation Iraqi Freedom, a multistage operation to overthrow Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, a move that would have longterm consequences a year later. After dissolving the Iraq military, a massive power vacuum was formed in the chaos, a vacuum that gave rise to an insurgency known as Al Qaeda in Iraq, or as we know them as today: ISIS.
With the chaos of the invasion, the insurgency took root all over Iraq, most notably in city of Fallujah, turning the entire city into a giant fortress. The goal was clear from there: go in and clear them out, something easier said than done. With the entire city fortified, the only way to clear it out was to go from building to building. What followed was the bloodiest urban battle since the Battle of Hue in the Vietnam War.
The game is called Six Days in Fallujah because US Marine forces thought they would clear the city in six days. The battle lasted almost two months. Two months of sweep and clears of every building in the city, a city where Al Qaeda was anywhere, and everywhere, with zero intel.
After the battle, a small studio called Atomic Games lead by Peter Tamte took inspiration from the battle and wanted to create a tactical milsim set during it, aimed at authenticity where you replayed the events as they happened through the perspective of US Marines that were there, feeling the horror they felt going in completely blind against an enemy that was anywhere and everywhere. The original game was cancelled in 2009 due to controversy about it being considered too soon, but a year later IGN reported the game was still planned. In 2012, Atomic Games went bankrupt, surely leaving Six Days in Fallujah truly dead...and then 2016 Peter Tamte formed Victura, and in 2021 he announced that Six Days in Fallujah is still coming. A game that has been cancelled numerous times that has refused to die, and in one way or another still kept coming back. And now, in 2023 thanks to the help of ex-Bungie devs at Highwire Games, the game finally released in early access, and to everyone's surprise...it's actually good. After years of development hell and multiple cancellations and controversy, it still came, albeit in a WIP state
Now, what is Six Days in Fallujah? It is a tactical co-op milsim FPS that aims to be the most realistic milsim ever created. You are part of a squad of US Marines set in a random operation, with a battlefield completely randomized. ALL battlefields are randomly generated with random conditions, so every engagement is unique and you do not know what to expect. You are going in completely blind everytime, just like the marines who were there.
In each engagement you spawn from a AAV (Assault Amphibious Vehicle.) From the AAV you can refill ammo, and redeem ONE respawn of any dead squadmates. Manage your ammo carefully when you go in, as it could be a challenge just getting back to the AAV if you run out. Operations will range from assaulting an enemy HQ, to standard sweep and clears, to protecting a convoy under fire, to search and rescue. Conditions will change everytime. Sometimes operations are at day, sometimes night, sometimes in the middle of a sandstorm. There could be an enemy sniper at all times causing you to take that into consideration. Even your loadout will be random, each player having a different role.
In this screenshot for example (taken from my Steam Deck) our convoy was under fire and we lost a vehicle to a car bomber that just went off. Shortly afterwards a couple insurgents took advantage of the resulting dust cloud to move up and flank us, causing our team to get wiped
Urban warfare is hell, especially fighting in houses against an enemy dug in with nothing left to lose not scared of dying. Clearing buildings they can be hiding in any small corner, even in tunnels.
As the game stands now, it has the foundation to be the best milsim game we ever had. In April will be the update to add AI teammates, allowing the game to be played solo, and later on more missions will be added and they'll begin work on the campaigns. There will be two campaigns for the game: One where you're among US Marines who were there at the battle recreating events as they happened, essentially you partaking in a war documentary, and the other campaign playing as an Iraqi civilian before the battle trying to get his family out of the city. I look forward to seeing what comes next for Six Days, as once AI teammates arrive I can already tell I'll be spending a lot of hours on it.
