I think the article is misleading, as it only shows up with a beta profile (so it‘s no public release but a RC).
The reason you get a 6GB update is because you go from a probably stable release (17.4) to a beta profile RC, which always is a full install.

Just installed a public iOS and iPadOS 17.4.1, no betas. About 300+MB on my iPhone 15.

Eventually you'll see todays iOS/IPadOS updates listed on this URL, not there yet.

Released today
  • iOS 17.4.1 (21E236) - March 21, 2024
  • iPadOS 17.4.1 (21E236) - March 26, 2024
  • visionOS 1.1.1 (21O224) - March 21, 2024
  • iOS 16.7.7 (20H330) - March 21, 2024
  • iPadOS 16.7.7 (20H330) - March 21, 2024
This iOS/IPadOS 17.4.1 was pushed to public, pubic beta, developer software updating devices.

The hardware it was pushed to is reflected in this URL (no details yet)

You need to fix the date for iPadOS to March 21, now it shows March 26. 🖐️

I hope it did something about the battery cuz my 15 Plus went from amazing battery life before 17.4 to iPhone 12 PM kind of battery life which means two times charging per day with no changes to my app usage.

Gonna do a ISPW update this time around
IPSW doesn't appear to be out yet.

So tired of giant updates. I have 16.5GB free on my 64GB iPad Air and the iPad says the download is too big and won't update. Why the hell does Apple sell a 64GB device if when only moderately full it fails to update? The update LITERALLY says it is 1.44GB.

"Unable to Download Update. There is insufficient space to download the update."

These forced updates are a monopoly! Let me install android on my phone!

oh wait, wrong thread sry.
Actually, Apple does have a monopoly on using Apple’s Settings app on Apple’s iPhone (which runs Apple’s iOS) to request an update from Apple, the company, to be downloaded from Apple’s Servers to the Apple iPhone. SOME would say, “Well, these are just products from a company, of course that’s how it works.” But, the government sees it differently. ;)

No. I have been using a Series 3 which is stuck on WatchOS 8 for a while now and it works perfectly fine. The only thing I have noticed that doesn't work is the Home app.
My series 7 running watchOS 9.6.3 will not connect to my phone running iOS 17.4. When I upgraded my Pro 14 to 17.4 I could no longer connect to my watch. I couldn't even access the watch app on my phone unless I upgraded to watchOS 10. Fortunately, I was able to downgrade the phone back to 17.3.1. So unless Apple has fixed this or changed this and allows me to use my series 7 running 9.6.3, I am not upgrading to 17.4.X again.

Ever since the RC for 17.4, when navigating using Apple Maps in CarPlay the navigation will spontaneously stop and return to just the normal map. Even did a full wipe and reinstall with no success. IP15PM.
Wow that's super weird. I used Apple Maps for over 2000 miles of driving this past week and no such issue. Same phone as you. I hope this version fixes it! 17.4 has been very buggy.

That’s why you have the update using a Mac/PC option.
The update’s uncompressed once it’s downloaded so it needs more than 1.44 gig but 16.5gig should be more than plenty though.

Well… maybe you can use your series 3 with watchOS 8 and your iPhone on 17.4 because… just like you said - your watch is stuck on watchOS 8?

If you have anything newer than series 3 you are forced to update your watch to watchOS 10.
WatchOS9 always works btw I’m on a series 7 and refuse to update.

I think if you’re on 10 already, then it forces you to update.

EDIT: I did not realize this changed with 17.4. Been holding back on 17.3.1

Hoping to hear from someone who has a series 4 or newer. Series 3 can't update to Watch OS 10 so I would expect it to work fine.. Watches that can be updated to OS 10 were forced to do so with the 17.4 update..
Word? I’m on 17.3.1 still, can you point me to an example of this? Not that I don’t trust you just want to verify before I update.

When I got my phone replaced I got around this by force restarting the watch and phone when it attempted to update the watch.

I found that 17.4 had some a) permission/privacy issues, and b) compass issues (even with Waze/Google Maps).

I hate to provide this semi-nuclear option, but have you tried resetting location & privacy?

(yes you'll have to RE-accept terms in all apps...)
