True, but that reasoning doesn't really apply to Samsung I think. Together with Apple they sell the most cellphones on the planet and have numerous other gadgets with screens such as the gear fit (they cell 54 different cellphone models alone ).

That factory would not only produce glass for one cellphone type but for all future product lines. I think Samsung is easily able to produce and sell (combined) 70 million cellphones, gear fits and other hardware in the next 5 years. I'm not saying that they should and would, but I think Samsung is one of the very few manufacturers that could probably justify such an investment for their own products.

They certainly can, but they won't. It's not in their nature to pioneer things. They usually look at what other people do and follow with their own modifications.

I really wish they would gtfo with the 5.5" brick. I'll warn you right now. You look like a douche holding that thing by your face.

4.7" for me, which sucks...because I like having the "best".

First off, why would I care what you think I look like holding my phone, and I think most would say that you, by judging people by their phone size alone, are quite likely the only douche in the mix. I will have a great Friday, secure in my own person, holding my Galaxy Note 3. Hope you are able to get past your issues and do the same.

How often would users who want a 5.5" phone hold it to their face?

One of my friends has a Sony phablet with a huge screen and he rarely makes calls on it. For him, what matters is document editing, web browsing and video watching.

Not to mention if it were REALLY that big of a deal (it's not), wouldn't you use a bluetooth headset? (Which brings up a whole other discussion altogether)

So Apple just need to create scratch-less anodized edges now, since the iPhone 5/5S scratches like silly.

Then he should both get more friends and buy a tablet.

i wonder how many ppl carry sand papers AND an iphone in their pocket :D

p.s. many carbides, used in sandpapers will scratch sapphire, just because those carbides are, 'by the laws of physics' able to scratch sapphire.

Almost everyone carries sand and paper in their pockets. Most scratches on GG come, not from keys and metal, but the hard quartz of tine dust and dirt particles in their pockets.

Now that you have learned something new today, you can again shut off your brain:-D

If only they could coat the entire phone in a similar material. It seems that I won't need a screen protector, but my keys and anything else will likely still scratch the body of the phone.

"Alford concurs: "In my opinion the screen being shown off in the video could well be a sapphire screen. If you make sapphire thin enough, and it’s flaw free, you can bend it quite considerably because it has an enormous strength."

He added: “I think they will be doing some sort of a lamination – binding different crystal cuts of sapphire together – boosting the toughness of the material, while they may also have induced some sort of a strain in the surface of the glass – either compression or tension – which means that it has extra strength,” he said."

All the reasons he gives are exactly why that is not a sapphire screen.
Waaay too much labor, cost, high error margin, etc. There is no reason for Apple to use this over Gorrilla Glass 3 for the new iPhones. And I believe that is what is being shown in the video.
Sapphire will be for the wearables.

As an expert in waterfowl, I’d suggest that it’s possible the screen shown in this video could actually be a duck. It’s remarkable what you can do with graphics without an animation team these days.

That being said, if I’m right I might take issue with this dude stabbing it...

According to news.investors.com Apple's new iPhone may be all glass.

http://news.investors.com/technolog...pushing-new-smartphone-designs.htm?ntt=iPhone

Meanwhile, Apple has patented a method of building seamless all-glass smartphones and other devices, AppleInsider reported Tuesday. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office awarded Apple the patent on Monday.
Apple said its construction technique would ensure durability, a lightweight design and eye-pleasing aesthetics. It could be used in portable devices as well as desktop monitors or televisions, AppleInsider said.
The patented glass-fusing technology may never make its way to the consumer market, but it has captured the imaginations of a lot of gadget lovers.
Apple's upcoming iPhone 6 smartphone line is expected to use a sapphire crystal screen that is super scratch resistant and shatterproof. Technology bloggers this week began posting videos and photos putting the upcoming iPhone 6 screen through punishing tests and emerging unscathed, as Business Insider reported.

Mac Rumors should check into this if it's true.

A 5.5" phone is TACKY. I'm going to be disgusted if sapphire screens aren't on the 4.7".

+1000

Why does Arn keep making this assertion? I know he understands that it is just rumor, but a 5.5" screen phone is just too gaudy.
