Hmm, after the patch Photos app starts freezing the whole system till force reboot. Check it for yourself.
I think that it is something about HEVC decode, which Photos app use to show media, imported from iOS devices.

There is a similar problem on Hackintosh

https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/335941-solved-photos-freezing-mojave-with-rx-580/

They suggest to use Lilu plugin kext NOVPAjpeg, i don’t know is it possible in our case.

" If you enable the on-board graphics(iGPU), Photos app will function correctly. I have faced the exact same problem."

I wonder, can we keep HW acceleration and Photos working together?
The original Lilu has a lot of options which can be added by adding the number of the option to the sum .maybe you can try some of those.

Not really related (at least no directly).

I use Photos apps a lot as well.

Three users profiles, two admin, one of the user account has 3 libraries. No issue at all.

If you want to try NOVPAjpeg kext, please go for it, should be no danger. If system crash with this kext, reset PRAM will disable it. Then you can remove it, and re-disable SIP , and re-enter the boot argument again to enjoy hwaccel.

If you believe that’s the Lilu kext (or hwaccel) related. You may even do PRAM reset now. So that hwaccel will be disabled. If you Photos apps back to normal. Then it’s a good prove that they are somehow related.

Tried installing NoVPAJpeg in Frameworks/extensions — it doesn't work.

Put that inside the Lilu plugin folder (the same folder as you install WhateverGreen), not in the system’s framework folder.

Lilu kext is definitely the reason in this case, because when i remove it from Extensions folder and reboot, Photos works normally.

NOVPAjpeg kext installed in plugin folder inside Lilu makes Photos freeze system every 5 seconds when Photos is opened, and when you will try to quit Photos (you will be able to do it only through force quit), it will hang up whole system completely until force reboot.

I can only say it's somehow related, but not directly.

Because there is no such issue on my cMP. Beta 4, beta 5, official release, all good.

Photos apps defiantly working, no crash, no hang, HEIC / Live Photos work as expected. Smooth and flawless.

So, it seems the two extra kexts crash with something else.

If you removed the kexts, but keep SIP disabled. Then it's clearly the kexts related in your case. Apart from these two kexts, did you install any other 3rd party kexts?

So sad the trick to enable H.264 acceleration didn't work with Nitro+ RX570 8GB 10.14.5 final.
Tried the steps in the stratego's 'reply'.
After reboot still no acceleration:

From memory, you are the 1st RX570 tester. but it should work, because both RX560 and RX580 works.

May be you missed some steps.

Please follow this post, and check if you miss anything

sip disabled:

Please help if I missed something

Success, after I run 'Kext Util', I didn't do anything just run the kext util and let it do its own stuffs (fixing folder permissions, etc).

Running the 4K swordsmith is very smooth no hiccups (CPU usage is low and GPU is 50% only):

Thank you h98

10.14.5 definitely did some tweaking with the RX580 drivers, GPU jobs in my BOINC project that used to complete in 35 minutes now complete in 28 minutes. Crap, it's like they're optimizing the drivers for once.

10.14.5 didn't do anything much for older card drivers like the D300/500/700s on the 6,1 or an RX 380 Nitro on a 4,1->5,1 though.

Hi all, thanks for the very interesting thread! Quick question, does the firmware change described by h9826790 in the first post, beside enabling the card being properly recognized in the System Report, also provide boot screen support?

Thanks, Riccardo

Under 10.14.6, running BOINC project Einstein, I have three machines, a TrashCan Pro with dual D700's, a regular Mac Pro 5,1 with a stock RX 580, and a converted 4,1 running a RX 380 Nitro.

In terms of just the GPU driven BOINC results, the 5,1 with the RX 580 -leads- the pack, with the Dual D700 TrashCan Pro (set to use 1 CPU per GPU so that 2 GPU tasks are running at the same time) with the Tonga based RX 380 a close third (like 20% behind the D700s.)

Might buy a second RX 580 if Santa is good this year, but I'm getting pretty good bang for the buck with the RX 380. Maybe if it dies.. I've heard the fans on the 4,1 rev up a bit but I usually just use Macs Fan Control to crank up the PCI fan another 30 RPM every time it happens and that seems to cover it.

Aren‘t D700s also Tonga? Or are they Hawaii XT? Was almost certain they were Tonga. Impressive that 1 Polaris can beat two whatever the D700 is though. Are they both seeing proper utilization?
