Dead Man's Shoes

A 2004 UK independent film that I highly recommend.

I saw it on the PutoTV indie channel but I also noticed it was on Tubi, iTunes, and Amazon Prime.

The only fault I have in the movie is that some of the UK accents were difficult to understand and there were no subtitles to help.

I especially liked how all the flashbacks were in black and white.

Haven‘t seen it yet, but am looking forward to watching Midway. I recently saw a short video explaining the background and events of the battle, and it sounds like the movie (2019) does a credible job of presenting it.
I haven’t been to a theatre in a couple of years, but it seems like this would be one best seen on the big screen.

A great film not that many people have heard of. Paddy Considine does a fantastic job in it.

Not sure this Midway will be as good as the original:

So many excellent actors in the original one.

Will try and watch it. There are two really excellent movies which, unfortunately, do not get the credit they deserve:

Murder In The First:

Truly a fabulous, inspiring movie! Some say it's Kevin Bacon's best performance.

Awakenings:

Another excellent, inspiring one! And at that time, definitely different types of roles for both Robert De Niro and Robin Williams.

Both of them are based on true stories, although Murder In The First does take a few "liberties". Also, I've always wanted to hear from De Niro what it was like preparing for such a role. Kind of reminds me of Dustin Hoffman's performance in "Rain Man":

I saw the original "Midway" in the theatre when it came out. The real draw for the movie wasn't the cast or the movie itself, it was the sound system. "Midway", like "Earthquake" a couple of years earlier, used the Sensurround system. The entire back of the theatre was just a wall of huge speakers! Talk about a loud movie experience! Not as good as todays Dolby Atmos and Digital Surround systems, but man, was it impressive. Explosions shook your whole body!

I never saw it in a theatre, so have no clue about this sound business. But it is/was clear that the superstar cast was excellent.

I just finished watching Midway 2019 thanks to a free movie ticket I got from an online offer. I thought it was too good to be true, but it turned out to be legit. Anyhow, it looked like a Chinese+Emmerich co-production with a ton of CGI that I felt like watching someone playing Xbox 4. Cool, but definitely not the same as Midway 1976. There were several additions to Midway 1976 that were in 2019. In Midway 1976, there were only a squadron of fighters led by Major Parks with antiquated planes launched from the Midway airfield. In the 2019, there were a lot of more planes launched from Midway including land based bombers where surprisingly they were all shot down while trying to sink the carriers. So I don't know if that's within the history books or they just added in because they look cool? To be fair, there was a land based bomber with one of its wheels stuck and landed back at Midway in the 1976 version. I never knew why they added that scene, but I think I knew why now seeing the 2019 version. Probably came back from the raid damaged caused by flack over the bombing raid. Also in Midway 2019, US submarines were also used to try and sink the Japanese carriers. The USS Nautilus was featured that had attempted to sink one of the Japanese carriers.

Anyhow, I felt like watching a snippet of Tora Tora Tora flanked by Midway and then Pearl Harbour 2001. It was ok, but the theatre was only 25% full. I also saw some people leave for awhile and then come back. The modern version isn't as story telling as the 1976 version. It is mostly about CGI and trying to pack as much plane action, sea action and how nasty the Japanese can be towards POW. Like when you got rescued off the life raft by the Japanese and you don't tell them which ship you came from; be ready to sink with an anchor tied to your feet. That scene wasn't in the 1976 version.

Well, there were land-based bombers that tried to attack the Japanese and they didn't do well. Also the first time the TBF Avenger plane was usedin combat was from Midway and although they ddin't do well due to inexperienced pilots, they fared much better than the TBD Devastators that were launched from the US carriers which were almost wiped out. However they drew the Zero fighters down almost to seal level which allowed the Dauntless dive bombers to catch the Japanese carriers and smash them.

You know you all are better off reading a book rather than what I gather is a CGI special effect fest.

Grumpier Old Men (1995)- A worthy sequel. I have a hard time seeing Sofia Loren with Walter Matthau, until I see her actual ancient husband. ;) ? Burgess Meredith gives a touching performance and was suffering from Alzheimer’s during filming.

Ms. Loren (one of my teen crushes) has a residence here in Geneva. Never met her though, and her husband died in 2007 so quite awhile back.

Possibly, everyone‘s teen crush, although I have a hard time remembering seeing any of her movies other than this one. :D

Watch the movie instead, when it comes to Netflix. Better yet, given that is not for another 2 weeks, watch any other Scorsese gem: Casino, Goodfellas, The Departed, etc.

FYI, The Big Picture podcast, #203 is a terrific Scorsese episode, Sean (the host), Chris Ryan (a fave from The Watch), and Adam Nayman rank their Top 5, interesting choices and analysis, they kind of were looking across the entire breadth of this work, considering films that many folks wouldn't list in a top X if asked off the cuff. Good stuff (a generally awesome podcast if you're into that sort of thing).
