Don't be rude, there's nothing wrong with trying to keep your case in a good condition.
The appropriate advice here, however, is that leather cases aren't the best cases when it comes to longevity due to its material - at least if you wish to maintain the original appearance of the case.

Sorry, didn't mean to be rude, was just a bit surprised by the question of 'avoiding marks'.

Avoid carrying an iPhone in a leather case in a pocket alongside keys and loose change - leather is very soft.
Avoid carrying an iPhone alongside keys and loose change, with or without case. Leather is soft, glass can be scratched.

I agree
Though I have a feeling the new (darker) product red leather will age beautifully

This thread intrigued me.
I’ve never owned a leather case.
The apple specialist that helped me finalize the purchase walked over to the cases, took down the red one and asked if I wanted a bag for the box. I looked at the case and liked the look, not so much the feel.

Well a month later, I love the case and how it’s wearing in as well as the feel.

Yes the darker red ages nicely, very happy.

Question for the Apple leather case users, how has it handled drops? I really like the case, but with a toddler in the house I need protection out of a case. I'm also a little apprehensive about the bottom being open, but that's just my insecurities I guess.

The case has battled and conquered gravity several times.

I was initially concerned about the bottom being open but it hasn’t been an issue.

Having owned at least 30 cases over the years and I must say the leather case is by far my favorite.

My friend at work is sporting the leather and he loves it as well.

Toddler.
I used to think it was asinine but a few friends have purchased iPod touches or iPhone 4 or 5 and made them the youngsters phone. They have all said their children take to their phones on/off as their toy and leave the parents phone alone.

Thanks for the info on the case. As far as my little guy, he has his own iPhone, its an old back-up 5 that I had lying around. There's no cell service to it, but he loves having his own "phone" The problem is that there are countless times he'll jump onto our bed or the couch and knock my phone off. Or here dad, it's ringing and kaplunk! That's why I need something that'll handle being dropped.

I'm also one of those people that tries to keep my leather case clean without excessive marks or scratches. I replaced my black three different times already to keep it clean and prestige. I'm going to just keep this one permanently now.

All I can say is enjoy this time and its only a phone.
They grow up so quick and the crazy moments can make such great memories.

I can understand this. The way I look at the leather case is its part of the phone, events, incidents resulting from use. and the patine is the sign I am using and enjoying my phone.
The last couple years I have started to let go of keeping everything perfect and just enjoying. :)

I posted this on another topic regarding dropping my iPhone X with a leather case. despite minimal protection from drops (I never expected excellent drop protection for how minimal it is), i loved the apple leather case. the bottom opening was never an issue for me. had the saddle brown, midnight blue and product red on my iPhone 6 for 2yrs. my iPhone 6 is still mint.

have dropped it on the pavement and only damaged the case, the iPhone was fine.

here's mine. dropped it inside my house on our brick fireplace. still fared well IMO. obviously saved the phone. i've dropped it a few other times on my tile at home but no damage. the bottom photo shows about a month of wear.

Haven’t dropped my x in leather yet, but I did several times with my 6.

Although aluminum is softer than stainless, there was not a mark on the 6 after many drops. Mostly the leather corners took the brunt of the energy. And since the front has a 1mm raised lip, the screen is very safe as well.

I probably will never use any other case for iPhones. The clean look of the back and the perfect fit and finish is proper.

How are you guys avoiding pockmarks/mini dings/impressions. My saddle brown is covered in them.

The beauty in leather isn’t in avoiding pockmarks, dings, scuffs and impressions. The beauty of leather in in gathering them.

Wether it’s a phone case, boots, gloves, bag, etc., each little ding, scuff, scar and impression is a little part of the life story of the item and what makes it uniquely yours. After unboxing, no two cases will be exactly alike :)

Nice pictures! I would love to see more patina pics of the Product Red iPhone X leather case. I’m considering picking one up.
