Maybe @arn knows the actual file size answer.

Here are the present rules:

Max attachment size is 10,000KB
Maximum Images dimensions are 2000 x 2000
Thumbnail dimensions are 350x350

I'm not sure why a 2000px image would get compressed. Maybe a 1999px one wouldn't?

Let me back up however:

We allowed unrestricted image uploading for a while. ideally, that would still be the case, but due to the size of these files on modern smartphones (3-4MB per image), thread loading got cumbersome for threads like this. It was load time for images and not storage size that was a the concern. As a result, I added the 2000x2000 limit, which also recompresses images, taking 3-4MB images down to a more reasonable ~800kb.

I would rather keep the original images where possible, but right now the system doesn't have a good in-between system. Ideally we would embed the resized image and still link to the original.

Looking at options. it seems we could try a couple of things:

Easy:

1. Change from the current compression library (GD -> Imagemagick)
2. Improve the quality setting which seems to be hardcoded

Harder:

3. Come up with some other system which preserves originals while embedded smaller images.

Thanks for the response, @arn.

I post to 1600px long edge, with max sharpness on export. I do notice that what I post here loads smaller than over at MU43, where the exact same image gets more screen real estate and probably helps with sharpness as well.

Am open to any suggestions on how other forums handle this.

Note: I've just changed our image processing library.

Can someone re-upload an image to see if quality is improved?

ugh, I just realized that we also have another factor in place. We also use an external cdn that dynamically reducing image quality and size. I've turned that off for attachments. So even older images may look better.

edit: hang on. testing some things

ok.

Images are still being reduced to 2000x2000, but not then recompressed. Let me know if this is working better.

Just tested this quickly, and yes, now images are not recompressed anymore if size is no more than 2000px. :) Thank you!!

If we stay within 2000px, the image file is same as for the original; anything above is resized/reduced.

P.S. When we use that ‘magnifying glass’ icon - is the thumbnail (350x350) just getting streched? It seems that when opening the image in full size (not using magnifyer) it results in more clear image.

Ah, earlier I just increased my image sizing to 1500px (not tried out yet on here, the most recent photo I just shared here earlier today I'd already processed prior to doing this. Maybe I'll kick my sizing up again to 1800 before I next share on here....

Thanks, Arn!

Thanks for your efforts! Well I just discovered something myself. For some reason, my MR account was loading the page in "Fixed" mode, as opposed to "Fluid HD" mode. In "Fixed" mode, the page would just letterbox as I widened the browser. Fluid HD fixes that, and now images scale with it! I'm not sure how I ended up in that mode?

Wow!!!! Thanks so much for mentioning this, Darmok, as I immediately had a look to see what my settings were and just for kicks promptly clicked on "Fluid HD" to see what would happen.... And, yes, there is a noticeable difference! Wow!!
Is there a way to make Fluid HD the default.

When I reset cookies it reverts back and I have to reselect again.

I don't have a good solution to that.

Actually... if you know how to set a custom style sheet. You can add

Code:
<style>#fNew{min-width: 950px; max-width: 2560px;} </style>

to it. Setting a custom style sheet for your browser, you'll have to google.

Hi!
I noticed that I can switch front page to desktop mode, however in forum view it is not possible. Mobile theme gives me some quite wide white borders in forums (Please see the attached screenshot), and I cannot get those away by selecting different style. Is it same for everybody?

on front page in mobile view there are no side/white borders...

Seems that deleting website data fixed the border issue.
...Fluid is without white borders, Fluid HD is with borders for me on iOS currently.
Guess it is supposed to be like that.

I didn't know about the fixed/fluid/fluid hd thing either. Fluid seems like a great hybrid for my 27" iMac. The HD version goes too wide for me.

Thank you, and thank you @arn for helping us out! ?
