Your patience when responding to this thread is exemplary. I don't know how you keep answering on this page.

Thanks, I started replying because people seemed genuinely worried that something was amiss with them and this was relatively simple. Now I think this thread is more of a cathartic "I'm really sick and i need to vent about it" place for people to feel they are not crazy, than a real "help me I really want to know what is happening to me" place.

I have expireienced this noise for many years as well and recently visited a neurologist for headaches, numbness in my back, and dizziness. I had an MRI done and it turns out I have Chiari Malformation. Well I mentioned the “neck sizzle” to my doctor during this visit and he told me that it’s likely due to the Chiari Malformation making it difficult for spinal fluid to pass through due to brain tissue extending into the spinal canal. Basically the fluid is squirting through a narrow opening. I read through all the posts and it seems some people have other symptoms as well. Some of the symptoms of Chiari Malformation include;

  • Neck pain
  • Unsteady gait (problems with balance)
  • Poor hand coordination (fine motor skills)
  • Numbness and tingling of the hands and feet
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Vision problems (blurred or double vision)
  • Speech problems, such as hoarseness
Apparently hunger signals are sent to the brain through CSF so maybe that would explain why it happens when we’re hungry. I can’t speak for others situations, but I feel confident this is the answer in my case.

Your neurologist lied to you. Most likely, he thought it was a non-consequential lie about a non-relevant symptom in an effort to change the subject to the more pressing/important/urgent issues at hand or to finish the visit. I get that you have an Arnold Chiari malformation, but that does not amount to it being the cause of the sizzling. You can have Arnold Chiari and a nail fungal infection and it does not mean the Chiari is the cause of the infection.

I'm sincerely sorry about your condition, and hope you get better, but no, "hunger signals" DO NOT travel to the brain via the CSF, that is preposterous.

I tried to not respond again in this thread, but what you wrote could be interpreted wrongly by some of the people reading this, altough you do well to clarify that it does not apply to every situation.

Once again, and I promise this is the last time I interject facts in the theory that convinces you, tickles your fancy and gives you peace: the sizzling sound are tiny gas bubbles coming up your oesophagus to your throat, that's why they go away after you drink ANYthing. CSF movement (created at a rate of about 20-25 ml per hour, that is less than an ounce BTW) is really slow, and you can not hear it, not unless you had a CSF fistula to your ear, and then the sound is the least of your problems.

Really hope you get better soon.

"I am convinced it's a brain creature, but went on the water diet and killed it"
^^seek help, quit smoking weed.

Ok, so I joined for this reason.
The best way I've heard it described is similar to being under water when a boat passes over you. The audible of that occurrence.

I'm 43, have had this for decades only when hungry.....because my neck isn't perfect, particularly my atlas, I assumed it was what a couple other posters descibed as "foraminal narrowing", possibly just the body talking to itself, and hunger messages squeezing through the brainstem; spinal fluid bubbles etc.

However, a similar sound over decades has been occurring between my ears in what might be the back of my throat.
Pulsating every, what, 15 seconds?
For about 2.5 second spurts?

I am satisfied @cdcastillo has answered this several times with the gastrointestinal reverberation for lack of better terminology.

I do have a hiatal hernia, and "reflux" is beyond common; people think I'm bulimic.
These other possible answrrs are hysterical, but scary, in that this causes no problem whatsoever in my 30 years (and yes, I also have severe tinnitus as well as migraines and feel they'te not remotely connected).

As cdcastillo said, drink food, eat water etc.
I'd also suggest a regular healthy diet and a daoly inversion table along with exercise.

So I'm going all out to figure out what this is.
Doctors appointment early February and I will respond with findings. I'm debating on the type of specialist to be referred to.

My current research has shown that most people with this issue have hypothyroid or symptoms of hypothyroid. The use of nicotine seems to worsen the condition.

I don't know about you all, but my stomach doesn't rumble like it used to. It feels like it should be rumbling, but instead my neck sizzles. Basically I am almost positive it is thyroid related for me but I will return and let everyone know.
[doublepost=1550457378][/doublepost]This is crazy! I've been looking for answers regarding this for months now. I've described it the exact same way. My stomach used to growl when I was hungry. Now, instead, my throat fizzes. I have hypothyroidism, and this is something that's only started occurring within the past couple of years. My doctor tells me it's from my silent reflux, but I'm not so sure. It feels more like gas than acidic fluid, but it definitely comes from my stomach.

Do you know how it's tied to hypothyroidism?

Isn't Chiari Malformation also commonly associated with Spinal Bifida and hydrocephalus?
I think it's common with hydrocephalus. I have a facebook group that mentions the two being linked together, however, I don't have it. I just have hydrocephalus and some strange seizure disorder.

I had wondered that as well since prior to being diagnosed with hypothyroidism it was a common occurrence. But now that I have been on Armour Thyroid for a few years, it has not been common. So I had just assumed (perhaps incorrectly) that it had been related to my thyroid and possibly swelling of the thyroid gland.

Wow, I can't believe this thread is still going. I was diagnosed several years ago with hypothyroidism. I'm not fully sure that's what was causing the sizzling noise in my neck in the early morning hours. I was on a vegetarian diet at the time I commented here and was eating a ton of beans and legumes. Every time I eat them nowadays, I wake up with hunger pains similar to when I would get the neck sizzling noise. Legumes are supposed to balance blood sugar, but that's definitely not the case with me. I was following a diet outlined in Dr. Fuhrman's Eat to Live book. Fuhrman doesn't really advocate a particular diet per say. The idea is to eat mostly vegetables and legumes and a little meat and grains. I tried supplementing with Fuhrman's multivitamins to make sure I was getting everything I needed but still had the same results after eating legumes. I've had much better luck with animal proteins.

I've seen a lot more people more recently talk about avoiding Lectins: https://www.livescience.com/62914-what-are-lectins-plant-paradox.html

I don't want to say legumes or lectins were directly responsible for my troubles, but my sizzling stopped after I cut back on them for a long while. I also don't want to say that cutting all grains is a great idea either. I tried cutting my morning oatmeal, and when I just ate eggs and vegetables, my stomach felt completely empty and I would feel a bit dizzy and nauseous. So I would just caution people to not cut all grains out of your diet, although I am gluten-free because it's better for my thyroid.

Anyway TLDR: if you're trying a vegetarian diet, you might try skipping the legumes for a week or so and seeing if that helps you. Also, getting your thyroid checked isn't a bad idea either. It could also be a food allergy of some sort.

Okay, so I swear I'm not crazy.... or at least not TOO crazy. Anyway, today here at work, I'm talking to my team lead and my neck starts doing this sizzling thing. Right from the base of my neck where it meets the skull, there's this sizzly / tingly / think french fries in hot oil weird sound coming out... and he can hear it, too. He says he has the same thing.

I've googled, I've web-md'd, and I can't find crap on this. I've not asked my doctor about it, but I'm going to. Anyone else have this?

It's not a sound coming from bones, or from turning your head. Don't say arthritis, because that's not it either. It's like it comes right out of my spine. I'm 22, going on 23 on the 24th of this month... and these noises didn't really start until I was like 18 or 19. They usually come on when I'm super hungry. My stomach growls with hunger pain, and then I hear the sizzles.

So, do you have the same thing? Know what it is? Am I really crazy, or what?
[doublepost=1550490473][/doublepost]So I’ve just found your post in a google search trying to find more info about the exact same thing!
It only happens to me when I am absolutely starving.. I get tummy pains and feel like a could vomit.. but I also hear a funny noise from my neck and have a pain pain in the actual spine of my neck.
Did you find any answers?

I've never really thought much of it... simply because it never seemed threatening and only happens when I'm hungry. Wouldn't have noticed it again today, but I managed to skip breakfast and was starving.

The only problem, is my doctor is going to look at me like I'm a friggin nutcase. I can't exactly reproduce the problem very easily, either.

So, no one else with the same hissing spine?

[doublepost=1551139609][/doublepost]No lie man I have had this happen to me but never really thought much of it till lately. I’m not sure when it happens to me like with you and being hungry but I went to a chiropractor today and mentioned it. He asked if I’ve been hard on my body. I’m 28 but he said it sounds like bones are disintegrating. So maybe that gives you an idea but I will let you know when I find out for sure. That was just a thought I guess.
[doublepost=1551140208][/doublepost]
I get that every once in awhile too. What you're hearing is your spinal fluid percolating. It sounds like 7up soda right after you've poured it into the glass, right? ;)
Exactly!!!!

[doublepost=1553685284][/doublepost]Everyone has this. It's called the acid reflux. My father is a doctor and when I asked because I had experienced it many times, he told me it was because I'm extremely hungry and my stomach acid is trying to digest something, but since there's nothing to eat, it splashes up into your esophagus, which is not good since the esophagus doesn't have a mucus lining like the stomach does to protect it from the acid. You just have to eat something and it'll go away. Hope this helped.

I literally made an account just so I could reply! I have this. I have it often. When my stomach growls or even when it doesn't I have this feeling. I asked my Dr about it and he said I could just be sensitive to my spinal fluid. I have had an MRI and there was no leak no tumor. Maybe we're all just sensitive and can hear our spinal fluid moving around. Also my husband has actually heard the fluid moving around before laying next to me.

Sizzling noise coming from neck

;) You are not crazy! It is perfectly normal to hear a sizzling in the back of your neck. It was strange for me as well when I started noticing it but believe it or not it has to do with becoming "Clairvoyant." Within the human body energy is always trying to flow smoothly. And since sometimes we might "feel hungry" or "tense" the energy pathways in our body ends up clearing blockages. It might seem like a figment of your imagination but trust me it isn't...it is all very real. The sizzling in the back of the neck is a gland that can activate and vibrate as much as it wants. In Psychology one of it's nickname is "The 3rd Eye." I hope my response helped you in anyway. I noticed you posted this a long time ago but I was dealing with the same thing today actually...and I'm 23. Not a coincidence!
That’s got to be the dumbest sht anyone’s ever said. Like, Jesus. You’re 23 and still believe in “3rd eye” bs and energy pathways!!? What do you think we are, avatars or some sht???

Hello and welcome to our tech forum focused on Apple products. :p

Joke, seriously it seems a lot of people have this issue and if you read through the thread there are several plausible explanations for this issue. I hope you find an answer for your issue and do try to talk to a doctor if it troubles you.

I have the same sound in my neck too, sizzling is a good way to describe it, don't worry you're not crazy lol. It only happens to me when I'm hungry, but, I don't eat very often so it does happen a lot. I can tell you microphones don't pick up on it sadly, tried letting a few friends of mine hear it but it didn't work, or maybe that's just me. Pretty sure it's just hunger related dude, no big deal and nothing to worry about!
