Good starting point, I hope this happens in Europe as well, and little by little all "social" media is eradicated.
They have too much information (power), they shape people, they shape kids, they shape the future. I'm sure this thing will collapse at some point, probably when it's too late, and I fear that young people will have a bad time because they are the main victims of this.

I hope they do. It's destroying the mental health of teens. All of the short form video apps are, but TikTok might be the worst. A Chinese app — it's banned in China for a reason.

Beyond the privacy concerns and CCP involvement, the app should go because of all these stupid challenges it keeps spawning, most notably the Kia Challenge in which you see how many Kias or Hyundais you can steal and take for a joyride. I wish I was joking

Atleast this one brought to light that the company has a massive security issue. Before this trend no one cared despite people trying to bring attention to it.

Interesting. I remember a certain property mogul-turned-reality tv star saying something eerily close to this a couple years ago but was repeatedly called racist because of it.....

So like MySpace did, and Facebook and Instagram... but those are fine because they aren't Chinese right?

Also no, its not banned in China.

Nice to see some bi-partisan support on this topic. China being a concern for the US should be something we should all agree on. Response may be different, but pretending China isn't a potential threat is ignorant.

Sure, but using a social media app that does nothing more than EVERY OTHER social media app while NOT also holding those others accountable is just massively ignorant and blows holes in the argument people are trying to make. An argument could be made about CHinese brand phones and Networking gear, but why have I not heard about anyone having issues with Lenovo? Lenovo makes a LOT of Government computers. Why have they not been banned when they previously had issues with hiding software in its firmware making it non-removable.

I think social media in general needs to go. They use practices which actively causes people to get addicted to their platform. I never seen so many people no longer communicate in person. Going out to dinner I see people with their noses in their phone vs talking to the person they are next to.

I believe since September 1, 2021, it has been a law in China that any Chinese entity processing data, in big or small amounts, is perpetually obliged to record and present that information to whatever extent the CCP government deems necessary.

Given that fact, why on earth was TikTok even initially allowed to proliferate the way it did, I will never understand. The damage is long done and that ship has already sailed.
TikTok should be banned just because of the stupidity that occurs on it. Talk about the dumbing down of society. 🙄

Your point also applies to Office 365, Box, etc. These are all obviously considerably worse in exposing confidential corporate and governmental information, but no one cares or talks about that. Problem with TikTok is Zuck did some big favors for the current administration, and now this service is eating his lunch. Time to cash in on some owed favors.

Also aren't some of the people wanting to ban this now the same people who laughed at Trump when he talked about it? The swamp, is the swamp, is the swamp. Can we ban all of them? Wall up D.C. or something like that? 🤔

I have a background in cybersecurity. My workplace ban Zoom for this very reason.

If you're on Android it's not a problem because you can just side load it. When Apple get forced to allow side loading then iOS users can do the same.

I know TikTok is bad but if they can ban TikTok then what's next? Having Apple/Google or a Government tell you what you can and can't download shouldn't be allowed.

Some people like to act like sideloading is evil and dangerous. It gives you freedom of choice.

That'd require too much effort it seems.
So comforting to know that there are Americans that could care less about National Security. You do realize that Apple/Google and the Government already tells you you can't download porn from the App Store or child porn (as an extreme example) from anywhere? Where do you draw the line? (obviously below National Security risks).

Yes please, I can't even go to the gym without a bunch of Zoomers occupying machines only to shoot cringy TikTok videos, let alone that we are being constantly filmed without permission wherever we go (even if we are just in the background). Having said that if TikTok gets banned then something else will replace it, but the shock alone that the new generation will go through will be amusing.

I don't disagree, software is just as dangerous as hardware though. I'd rather have no social media (but I digress), but if we have to have social media companies, I'd rather it be influenced by at least an American company than a foreign entity.

Good. The CCP is an enemy of the United States and its people. We shouldn't allow tic Tok, them to own US property, take their students into our schools, or make products in that country.

You know the difference between China stealing data and a U.S. company stealing data?

Clearly not lmao

Quick somebody give this guy the nuclear football
There’s no need for you to be rude. I didn’t say it was fact just a thought. But you are awesome.

Why? Most the US based ones still sell the info overseas though back channels anyway.
