I finally tried on the Apple Watch at the store today. Surprisingly, they had available spots right away.
Before the appointment, I thought my first choice was the 38mm Sports model with a black band, followed by the 38mm Standard model with a midnight blue band.
First I tried the Sports models on 38 and 42mm. Like I thought, the 42mm was a little big (not much). I always preferred small watches (35mm), so that's no surprise.
The rubber on the Sports watch felt fine, although it made the band "start" too far away from the skin and made the watch too loose. If I fastened it one notch tighter then it was too tight. The girl in change of the fitting told me I might like more the Standard ones, since the metal that attaches the band to the watch makes the band closer to the skin.
She was right. It felt a lot better. I started with the classic buckle. It felt very familiar because it is the type of band most people have used for years.
The Milanese loop was a mess. It was very luxurious, but the metal keep sticking to itself. I was not looking forward to putting it on and taking it off every day. Maybe it would get better with practice. However, it made the watch feel and look "too big" and didn't look as good on me. I was not expecting that and was very surprised, since it's such a popular and luxurious looking option.
The modern buckle with midnight blue leather looked rather "cheap" as I was putting it on. Plus I was having trouble getting it on. After the girl helped me, it kept getting easier and I liked it more the more times I put it on and took it off (I ended up trying it on several times throughout the fitting).
I ended up the fitting trying on the 35mm Sports and 35mm midnight blue with modern buckle one last time at the end of the fitting. It confirmed I liked the midnight blue band the best.
Unfortunately, I don't expect to get an Apple Watch for the time being because my current phone is an iPhone 4 and I want to use it until it breaks. However, Standard, midnight blue, modern buckle, is the one I would get.
Based upon my experience, I suggest people try the Apple Watch at the Apple store before they order one.
