I hope it means we can finally put icons anywhere instead of making them flow to the top left

1. Kill the home bar (At least a setting to turn it OFF)
2. Customizable icons on lock screen (stupid to have a configurable action button and not this)
3. I really dislike the left-swipe on lock screen to access the camera, I unexpectedly enter it every time that I'm clearing notifications
4. Add Smart Lists for contacts in the iPhone, ridiculous not having this already implemented and icloud-sync'd

“This year, we’re taking iOS to a whole new level. This will be the most powerful iPhone update we’ve ever released. iOS is the most advanced OS available for iPhone and we can’t wait for you to see it.”

iOS 18.

For some reason this just makes me feel old. They need to do something new man.
If you want to feel really old, had macOS followed normal version numbering from Mac OS X 10.0 through Big Sur we'd be on macOS 29 (or slightly lower depending on if the "tock" upgrades like Snow Leopard, Mountain Lion, etc. are counted as full version jumps vs 0.5 updates).

All joking aside, AI is not just about adding a new layer of software tools and frameworks on top of iOS. It is also about giving the system the authority and agency to run its own process, using whatever digital assistants Apple first wants to incorporate. Siri is a likely candidate for understanding longer text spoken directions. Likely iOS 18 is about taking the first steps with AI front and center rather then hidden but nothing so radical that Apple can't continue to improve these layers over the next couple of years without security issues. ;)

iOS 18 will feature a revamped Home Screen that is "more customizable," according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. He revealed this information in his Power On newsletter today, but he did not provide any specific details.

Apple will announce iOS 18 at its annual developers conference WWDC in June. Other features and changes rumored for the software update include new generative AI functionality for Siri and multiple apps, RCS support in the Messages app for improved messaging between iPhones and Android devices, design changes, and more.

With iOS 18, Gurman believes Apple will focus on new "AI tools that help manage your daily life" more than "ChatGPT-like generative AI features."

Gurman reiterated that at least some Apple employees believe that iOS 18 will be the biggest software update in the iPhone's history.

For more details about the update, check out our iOS 18 roundup and latest rumor recap.

Nested folders would be nice.

Finally, because apart from widgets the home design hasn't changed in 17 years!

Making folders a bit taller when opened would be a start, so much wasted space on the top and bottom.

I am not sure Apple wants to utilize generative AI at all for a OS. That is what is taking most of the flak at people upset about AI. If Apple sells to a goodly amount of creative types, why would Apple accept the risk of improperly generating text, images, videos, or other data that other corporations or governments are offended with. It's like that stupid failure by google to change historical images to be interracial. What a mess that was, and from a company supposedly suppose to QA their processes not to allow stuff like that.

Using the knowledge navigator example Apple is into much usage of digital assistants to do automated tasks groups to retrieve or furnish information to the user using AI. Those same digital AI assistants can also be used to compete work assignments by completing arduous tasks instead of the user.

Hopefully they allow generative Ai to rearrange the home screen icons in equally undesirable ways rather than allowing the user to organize them.
That would have nothing to do with AI would it? The lock to an icon array arrangement is something that Apple needs to adjust with the next iOS18.

Are you a new visitor to MacRumors? Cynicism is the primary response no matter what the sub topic is if it falls under the heading of "Apple."

Not new, but it feels like it's getting worse. No one is happy about anything.

Guess it's a reflection of society in general

Need to be able to resize app icons and place them anywhere on the display. User should be able to set a default so that all of the apps rest from the bottom of the display, instead of the top.

Need to make it possible to hide the App Library.

As long as we get a good calculator app, I will be happy.

The calculator app on iPhone is used for simple stuff only, give it complex stuff, it isn’t proper.

You realize the last time they did this in iOS 7, it took like three iOS releases for it to become fully stable again, right?

Please, no UI refresh. Small incremental changes like we've been having is fine.
Also, the interface as we know it today didn’t settle until iOS 13.

They kept changing Control Center, going through many different phases (iOS 7-8-9, iOS 10, and finally the iOS 11 Control Center we all know nowadays), the app switcher underwent changes until iOS 9 where they settled, and then it wasn’t until iOS 13 that the glyphs and symbols of the entire UI settled into the rounded typography we know today.

If such deep change of the user interface took like 6 years to be solid and complete, I don’t want to imagine a whole new interface that could bring inconsistencies that take years to fix/change.
