Have you charged your MBP from a fully discharged state using the WD19TB? Were you able to do this AND use the MBP for any decently heavy computing task? I have a CalDigit USB-C Pro Dock with an 85W power adapter and it croaks if I'm charging the 16" MBP.

No. I had my 16" MBP for just a few days and haven't done any pressure testing intentionally. Apple's official charger delivers only 94W in my use and I'm happy with the WD19TB delivering 90W. CalDigit claims no problem in using their current 85W TS3+ or USB-C Pro Dock with the 16" MBP, which may be a bit loose (there is reason Apple increases the power for the 16"). So from 94W down, there is probably chance of battery drain (see e.g. #292). But the chance should still be quite slim at 85W, from CalDigit's test/claim and my own experience (limited). I hope this helps.

I've started with a battery with about 25% charge in the morning. I just plug it in and don't even think about it as I work during the day and when I left was fully charged. It works just as I need it.

I’m getting a 16” MacBook Pro and want to get a dock to keep at the office. I want the dock to power the computer. I was wondering since the newMBP comes with a 96w power charger will a dock rated at 85w be able to charge the MBP?

if anyone has any good recommendations for a tunderbolt dock please share.

Someone in this thread had asked about supplemental power with the Sonnet eGFX 650 OC.

FYI, this eGPU reports 100W power, but switches over to the Apple 96W for power source when that is connected (despite the lower power draw).

Was finally able to test with an Apple 61W USB-C charger for MBP13". The MBP16,1 does NOT switch over to the Apple 61W source when the Sonnet eGFX 650 OC is the only other device connected. Meaning the MBP16,1 takes power from the 100W source only.

It was questioned/speculated the Apple ID and basically metadata that is supplied/tied to the USB-C charger would force the switch, but there must be a certain limit when that switch actually happens. 61W is obviously lower wattage, but was asked about...

The CalDigit TS3 Plus that supplies 85W is switched over to the 96W charger when plugged in.

There is nothing OWC... it’s a Sonnet eGFX 650 OC model (no W) that provides 100W PD.

You should be fine with an OWC. The wattage isn't as high as you'd like, but it will handle the load and charge it just fine.

Doing a blender benchmark with CPU and the power is pecked around 90-100W. I was trying with some demanding games it definitely went over 100W.

My setup has an 4k60hz and an 1080p ultrawide which I would like to hook them up to the 16MBP, but it doesn't seem like there exists a good solution out there yet.

I use the Dell WD19TB. It is only rated at 90W but haven't found that to be a problem. I use it at work with my Dell XPS 7590, 2018 15" MBP and 2019 16" MBP. I have it connected to 2 1440p monitors, ethernet, speakers and wireless keyboard and mouse. Works great bouncing between all 3 flawlessly. The only issue is one of the displays will need to go through a usb-c connection. The MBP's won't drive 2 through the Displayport or Displayport/HDMI combo. But that's it's only quirk.

Gigabyte gaming box provides 100 watts

Have you personally confirmed this with macOS and MBP16,1? This specific eGPU box had mixed reports of issues with macOS compared to other “all in one” eGPU box models. Several say the ports do not work reliably.

Did anyone else who complained about the Aukey get a random email from someone named Mike who claims to be with Aukey? He said there was a firmware update for the C71 to enable 100W charging, but the link was a sketchy looking dropbox share.

Could you post the link so I can take a look (I have an aukey too)? I guess it could be a fake (someone's email account at Aukey got hacked, so they got your email addresses), but then they wouldn't be the first company I have seen to send beta firmware in a dropbox link.

I was using CalDigit Pro Dock received by Christmas. Based on it website, it supports 87W power output. Just like other 87W docks, it won’t charge your MBP when it was fully running.

However, during this Christmas holidays, I was having a serious random disconnection problem. Especially under the Bootcamp Windows. It happens usually every 5 to 10 mins and the dock was extremely hot. Every time I have to replug the cable, otherwise all external USB devices won’t work after random disconnection. I don’t know if it is a normal issue or just mine.

I am now using TS3 Plus today. Since I don’t have time to fully test it, I won’t say if it works perfect or not. So my advice is avoiding the Pro Dock for now.

I'm assuming it's real... i wrote back that I have CB-C68 and he provided links to that too. I haven't used them though.

Well the CB-C71 firmware made things worse for me, it now keeps switching to battery power when there is only a little load. I have emailed them back and will probably have to wait for another firmware update. Just have the power plugged directly into my Mac for the moment.

Did you have to run one monitor from the USB-C or were you able to run both through the DisplayPort connections?

Aside from what rex450se asked, can you also verify the power of AC adapter in the system information report while the power supply is connected via the dock?

tl;dr; does the hub provide 94/96W of power and works with two displays connected via the display port to the hub?
